Sunrise-555. Obverse: Brahmi legend surrounding male figure wearing crown on horseback right; spearing lion that stands at left upon hind legs; Reverse: Lakshmi nimbate, seated upon lotus facing, holding diadem in right hand and lotus in left. One of the more enigmatic and impressive early Medieval issues, this Dinar has traditionally been ascribed to a Gupta king known as Prakasaditya, though reason to doubt this attribution has surfaced somewhat recently. An exceptionally struck example with a full legend in a provincial Indian museum displayed the full obverse inscription, declaring the issuer a Hunnic king Toramana. The present example delivers good appeal, and is struck on a compact flan, a common occurrence for the type. The details are rendered well, with some natural rub on the higher elements. A more uncommon type, and one for which there should be no shortage of excited bidders seeking an example.
