Fr. 129. 1878 $20 Legal Tender Note. PMG Gem Uncirculated 66 EPQ.
Seen with the utmost irregularity compared to their counterparts from the "Series of 1880." This $20 Legal Tender featuring the engraved signatures of Allison and Gilfillan resembles its later counterparts in an aesthetic sense with the right-facing portrait of Alexander Hamilton and the Amazonian depiction of Liberty holding her shield aloft in her right hand. However, typical of the 1870s an excessive and intricate floral overprint is employed. Dual pinkish-red "XX" counters are seen at left and right of the central "20" die counter, while a medium spiked Treasury Seal sits just beneath the right overprinted denomination counter.
