Description

1855 Pattern Flying Eagle Cent. Judd-168 Original, Pollock-193. Rarity-4. Bronze. Plain Edge. Proof-62 BN (PCGS).

Obv: Thirteen peripheral stars surround a long-necked flying eagle, with its head tilted slightly upward, the date 1855 below. Rev: A circular wreath surrounds the denomination ONE CENT with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the periphery. Richly original deep autumn-brown surfaces define this desirable pattern Flying Eagle cent in large format. A bit lightly struck around the peripheries, and also within isolated portions of the wreath on the reverse, but not uncommonly so for the type. Frosty surfaces are a tad subdued to help explain the Proof-62 numeric grade from PCGS, but there are no marks or other blemishes of note. This coin was purchased from S.H. Chapman's October 1910 sale of the Major Richard Lambert Collection, lot 721, and has been off the market since. This lot includes the auction invoice dated November 1, 1910, with S.H. Chapman's signature confirming payment. The buyer paid $1.45 for the lot, including commission and postage. (Total: 1 coin; 1 auction invoice)

PCGS# 11720. NGC ID: 29AG.

From the George Collection. From S.H. Chapman's sale of the Major Richard Lambert Collection, October 1910, lot 721.

Estimate: $3000
