1935 Connecticut Tercentenary. MS-67+ (PCGS).

Wonderfully original surfaces are expertly preserved and adorned with mottled reddish-orange, golden-olive and copper-russet patina. Rare premium Superb Gem quality for the type that is sure to catch the eye of discerning bidders. Commemorating the 300th anniversary of the founding of the Colony of Connecticut, half dollars of this type were authorized by the Act of June 21, 1934, and designed by Henry Kreis. Twenty five thousand examples were struck in the Philadelphia Mint and distributed by various Connecticut banks. The obverse features the famous Charter Oak, in which the royal charter protecting Connecticut is said to have been hidden in 1687 when King James II ordered its revocation. The deposition of the King in 1688 during the Glorious Revolution saved the charter. The first English colonists to settle in present day Connecticut arrived at Windsor in 1633, followed by others at Wethersfield the following year. These and other early settlements were originally part of Massachusetts, but in 1635 John Winthrop the Younger received a commission to create a new colony at Saybrook at the mouth of the Connecticut River.
