1877-CC Liberty Seated Half Dollar. WB-15. Rarity-2. Type II Reverse, Medium CC. MS-64+ (PCGS). CAC.
Wisps of light reddish-gold iridescence engage surfaces that present as largely brilliant at most viewing angles. This is a lustrous and satiny near-Gem that also sports razor sharp detail to all design elements. After the 1876-CC, the 1877-CC has the second highest mintage among Carson City Mint half dollars, the total number of coins produced 1,420,000 pieces. As mentioned elsewhere in this catalog, all three operating mints (Philadelphia, Carson City, San Francisco) ratcheted up half dollar production in 1875 in anticipation of parity being achieved between Legal Tender notes and silver, which occurred on April 20, 1876. While plentiful in an absolute sense by Carson City Mint half dollar standards, the 1877-CC is scarce in Mint State relative to the strong collector demand for such pieces. In the finer certified grades, as here, this issue represents a fleeting bidding opportunity for the advanced collector whenever an example appears at auction.
