1850-C Liberty Head Half Eagle. Winter-1. EF-45 (PCGS).
This is an attractive 1850-C $5 bathed in bold lemon-olive color. Frosty to semi-reflective, with only light rub across all devices. A lamination peel spanning from the N in UNITED to the center of the shield should be recognized on this example, rare to see on any U.S. gold coin. Charlotte Mint half eagle production remained relatively high going into the 1850s; the first issue of that decade had a mintage of 63,951 pieces. The 1850-C is one of the more available dates in this Southern gold series, and examples in VF and EF are ideal for inclusion in a mintmarked gold type set. With no contemporary numismatic interest in these coins, the rigors of commerce claimed most with the result that survivors are scarce to rare at all levels of preservation
