Grand Rapids, Wisconsin. $20 1882 Date Back. Fr. 550. The First NB. Charter #1998. PMG Choice Very Fine 35.
Overlooking the Wisconsin River, Grand Rapids was a small city formed from the consolidation of Centralia and Grand Rapids, the latter of which became the name of both communities following consolidation. However, the name Grand Rapids would be short-lived. The name of this town was changed to Wisconsin Rapids in 1920, to prevent mail from being directed to the arguably better-known Grand Rapids, Michigan. A total of 4 $20 Date Backs are recorded on this locality by the National Bank Note Census. An interesting example that reflects a tangible link to Wisconsin and Wood County history and the confusion which arose on account of a similar name.
