Description

Port Deposit, Maryland. $5 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 467. The Cecil NB. Charter #1211. PMG Very Fine 20.

A small locality located along the Susquehanna River, Port Deposit was once a hub of major commercial activity owing to its geographic position close to the Chesapeake Bay and major cities such as Baltimore and Philadelphia. Served at one time by the long-lived Cecil NB, notes from Port Deposit are seen with a degree of frequency today owing to the 43 examples recorded by the National Bank Note Census. Featuring the signatures of Cashier Robert Cabeen Hopkins and President Jacob Tome. Tome concurrently served as President of the National Bank of Elkton, Maryland, and was among one of the richest men in the United States at the time of his death in 1898 with an Estimate:d net worth in excess of $98,000,000.00, and was succeeded by his wife Evalyn Tome France who became one of the few female bankers in the United States.
