Austin, Texas. Treasury Warrant. 1860s $44.60. PMG Very Fine 25. Sam Houston Signature.
Unassuming and weathered at first glance, this piece of paper was once a Treasury Warrant for the total of $44.60 and issued shortly before the commencement of hostilities in the American Civil War. However, this fact alone does not explain the allure of this seemingly ordinary piece of paper. Bearing the signature of Governor Sam Houston, Texas Revolutionary, twice President of the Republic of Texas, U.S. Senator, and finally Governor from 1859 to 1861 before being removed from office following his refusal to condone succession and take a loyalty oath to the newly formed Confederate States of America. Overall, an attractive and tangible piece of history with minimal faults linked to one of the great personalities of American and Texas lore. PMG comments "Pen Cancelled & Stains."
