RI-197. Rhode Island. June 29, 1775. 6 Pence. PCGS Banknote Choice Very Fine 35 Details. Repairs.
No.2036. Signed by Bowler and Greene. Printed by John Carter. Printed on laid paper. Uniface in standard 1770's Rhode Island style. Within three border cuts are typeset texts. The Rhode Island seal is at left with the signatures at bottom. Payable at 2.5% interest. As notes wore out, they were generally replaced by notes from the next series. Tattered low denomination bills were normally replaced by one or a few larger denomination notes (a Forty Shillings note would eliminate 80 Six Pence bills from a prior act). As a Six Pence note, this would have seen much circulation. PCGS Banknote cites "Repairs." In checking auction results and grading Pop reports, it seems clear that virtually all of the available notes from this June 29, 1775 issue are whole denominations. A bright, colorful, and well signed piece that is on the cusp of the Extremely Fine grade is certainly in the condition census. We sold this same note for $1,150 in 2006 as part of our Ford XV session.
