1869/'8' Silver Three-Cent Piece. Breen-2960. Proof-64 (PCGS). CAC.
Always a popular variety, this issue was described by Walter Breen as an overdate and had been listed in The Guide Book and other listings as "1869/8;" more recent scholarship by numismatists like Kevin Flynn have studied this series and he suggests that the 9 was repunched, and is not a true overdate. Long collected as part of the regular series as an overdate, PCGS lists it as 1869/'8'. This near-Gem Proof example offers brilliant mirrors in the fields and a blush of toning, particularly at the peripheries, where blue and coppery-gold is quite pleasing to the eye.
