1793 Flowing Hair Cent. Chain Reverse. S-1, B-1. Rarity-4. AMERI. VG Details--Graffiti (PCGS).
Historic and quite scarce, while less than perfect, this AMERI Chain cent remains highly collectible and desirable. An attempted puncture and the engraved (or punched) initials 1.F.S. on the obverse. The reverse wholesome overall with evenly worn surfaces and just some natural planchet issues that have no impact on the eye appeal. The Sheldon-1 die marriage represents the first cent struck for circulation in the earliest days of federal coinage under the April 1792 "Coinage" Act. While a number of patterns and prototypes were struck under the auspices of the First United States Mint in 1792, it was not until 1793 that the Henry Voigt Chain cent was put into "mass" production for circulation ("mass" is used loosely as only 36,103 Chain cents were made of all die marriages, before switching to the Wreath design).
