1787 Nova Eborac Copper. W-5760. Rarity-3. Medium Bust, Seated Figure Right. AU-55 (PCGS).
These rarely come any finer than this, the frosty golden-brown surfaces retaining both bold to sharp definition throughout and blushes of faded pinkish-rose mint color in the protected areas around many of the design elements. Wisps of underlying powder blue also come into view at direct lighting angles to further enhance the eye appeal. The left peripheral lettering on both sides is flush with the borders, to no great detriment, and an extremely faint spot low in the right obverse field is also of little consequence. Struck from a middle state of the reverse with a prominent piece out of the die only around the cinquefoil, the cud break not yet extending to the seated figure's ankle. We've offered just a few AU examples of this Whitman number over the years, and this one is preferable to most or all of them.
