1787 Connecticut Copper. Miller 33.19-Z.2, W-3650. Rarity-5. Draped Bust Left. AU-58 (PCGS).
118.3 grains. An outstanding example of this Miller number, the finest we can recall handling, and comfortably near the top of Condition Census. Nice rich golden-brown on the obverse, a little darker olive-brown on the reverse. Traces of fading mint red color can be seen on some of the letters on the obverse, as well as on the letters DE in INDE on the reverse. Central obverse rough, fields smoother, just a little scattering of flaws at the top. The reverse is even rougher at center, the seated figure nearly obscured, fields granular, upper left microscopically granular. We have sold five nice examples of this Miller number recently, all graded between EF-45 and AU-55. Two were secondary appearances of the Partrick and Newman coins, the most recent was the Syd Martin specimen that realized $1,800 in a PCGS EF-45 holder. The Canfield-ANS coin is perhaps the sharpest but has corrosion spots and appears cleaned. This one would be difficult to improve upon and should see spirited bidding.
PCGS# 685144. NGC ID: 2B2X.
