1863 Indian Head / CONSTITUTION AND THE UNION. Fuld-60/346 do. Rarity-7. Copper-Nickel. Plain Edge. Overstruck on an 1859 Indian Cent. MS-63 (NGC).
19 mm. An attractive light tan specimen with some intermingled rose color that is more prominent on the obverse. The strike from the token dies is offset only a few degrees counterclockwise from that of the Indian cent, and the 1859 date of the undertype is easy to discern just to the left of the 1863 date. Most other design elements of the cent are also discernible in outline, even without the aid of magnification. We have offered a number of overstruck examples of this die pairing in recent years, although all were on either 1863 Indian cents or examples of the Civil War store card Fuld-NY-630W-1a. This is the first specimen overstruck on an 1859 Indian cent that your cataloger (JLA) can recall handling over the last two and a half decades.
