Official Letter from the Secretary of the 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition Ordering a Grand Prize Award Medal for Ellwood Cooper.
6 inches x 9.5 inches. An intriguing item, the first of its kind that we can ever recall offering. The letter reads: Cotton States & Internat'l Exposition Co. Atlanta, Ga., 1896. Peter L. Krider Co. 618 Chestnut St., Philadelphia, Pa. Gents: - You will please furnish and deliver to Elwood [sic] Cooper Santa Barbara Cal the Gold Medal awarded to him by the Cotton States International Exposition Co., on the pay-ment to you of the cost of same, viz: $125.50. If preferred and so ordered, you may deliver instead of the Gold Medal a gold plated (on silver) medal, cost $9.00, or gold plated (on copper) medal, cost $4.00. The name as above to be engraved on the medal. Very truly, &c., (signed) J.R. Lewis Sect'y C. S. and Int'l Expo. Co. Grand Prize This letter presumably refers to the award medal cataloged as Harkness Reg-8, although the reference notes that those medals were made by Gorham Mfg. Co. The letter is quite tattered with short tears, folds and wrinkles around the edge, light stain along the top. The paper remains fairly crisp, nonetheless, and although there are some minor internal wrinkles, it is free of folds. All text, both typed and handwritten, is bright and crisp, the paper with only the slightest foxing on the back. Very rare. There are no medals in this lot .
