Description

MIXED LOTS. Trio of Early 20th Century Medals (3 Pieces), 1915-1924. Grade Range: EXTREMELY FINE to CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED.
1) GERMANY. Sinking of the Lusitania Cast Iron Medal, 1915. Eimer-1941Aa; cf. Kienast-156 (for prototype). The British copy. After Karl Goetz. Diameter: 55mm. Obverse: The Lusitania sinking in heavy seas; legend above KEINE BANNWARE, and in five lines in exergue DER GROSSDAMPFER / LVSITANIA / DURCH EIN DEUTSCHES / TAVCHBOOT GESENKT / 5 MAY 1915; Reverse: GESCHAFT UBER ALLES (business above all), Death (as a skeleton) standing left within ticket booth marked CUNA[RD]/LINIE and CUNARD (the Cunard Line, owners of the ship) above and to right, and FAHRKARTEN/AUSGABE (ticket office) below; to left, queue of passengers, one of whom reads a newspaper with the headline U/BOO[T]/GEFAH[R] (U-Boat danger). A British copy (courtesy of Selfridge's) of the ever-popular original German issue by Goetz, this example with the English spelling of "MAY". CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED. 2) FRANCE. Battle of the Marne Memorial Bronze Medal, "1914"(ca. 1918). By J. P. Legastelois. Diameter: 68mm. Obverse: Conjoined, uniformed busts of Generals Joseph Joffre, Michel-Joseph Maunoury, and Joseph Gallieni, all facing right; sprigs of laurel branches at left and right, "SEPTEMBRE/1914" in exergue below; Reverse: Marianne-Victory, soaring above with sword in right hand, exhorts the mass of British and French troops below; anepigraphic; Edge: cornucopia and BRONZE. Commemorating a key week-long early battle in the first world war, fought by some two million troops with an estimated half-million casualties, resulting in an Allied victory. Some spotting and/or stains on both sides. CHOICE ALMOST UNCIRCULATED. 3) GERMANY. Flight of Zeppelin LZ-126 to America Bronze Medal, 1924. Hans Kaiser-451.3, Bernd Kaiser-721b. By H. Zimmermann for Meyer & Wilhelm, Stuttgart. Diameter: 60mm. Obverse: Capped bust of Count von Zeppelin, right, perimeter legend, signature on truncation; Reverse: Mercury, at right, holds aloft the LZ-126 over waves below, concentric perimeter legends above, perimeter legend below; Edge: Plain. The LZ-126 became the U.S.S. Los Angeles once received by the U.S. Navy. Some scuffing to the obverse bronzing and scratches on the reverse. EXTREMELY FINE.
