Description

ITALY. Naples. 120 Grana, 1808. PCGS AU-53.

27.44 gms. Dav-165; KM-248; Gig-3; Mont-409; MIR-43313. Choice for the issue, possessing a bold strike and fields that retain visible luster beneath a thin veil of tone. Napoleon made his older brother Joseph king of Naples in 1806 but Joseph was no puppet, building roads, hospitals and schools and battling bandits in the mountains. He reluctantly left Naples in 1808 for Spain, where his attempt to repeat his successes in Italy turned into a disaster.
