GERMANY. Nurnberg. Goldgulden, 1612. Matthias (1612-19). NGC AU-50.
Fr-1809; KM-15. A VERY SCARCE and seldom seen type, this being the first appearance in a major U.S. auction since our 2010 sale of the Vermuele collection (Stack's, January 2010, lot 694, EF mount removed). For that coin, we noted that the "Latin legend commemorates the Imperial couple's entrance into this prosperous Free City." This example, although displaying no evidence of a past mount, is similar to that piece in terms of detail, with attractive warm orange tone around the designs, a touch of waviness in the flan and surfaces that have been slightly brightened from past handling.
