Description

FRANCE. 1/2 Louis d'Or, 1701-C. Caen Mint. Louis XIV (1643-1715). ANACS AU-50.

Fr-437; KM-332.3; Gad-241. Demi-louis d'or aux huit L et aux insignes from a RARE type struck 1701-03. This date is NOT listed in Gadoury or the Standard Catalog of World Coins. Attractively preserved, albeit struck slightly off center on a previous type, with strong detail in Louis XIV's portrait and flashy luster in the fields. Because of the misaligned strike, the 1694 date from the previous issue remains fully visible on the reverse margin at twelve o'clock, which makes for a rather unique viewing experience.
