1723 Wood's Hibernia Halfpenny. Martin 4.43-Gc.5, W-13120. Rarity-6. AU-55 (PCGS).
107.8 grains. Finer than the plate coin for the late die state of both the obverse and reverse dies in the 2007 Martin reference on Wood's Hibernia coinage, this handsome piece is lustrous and decidedly golden-brown on the reverse. The obverse is a deeper chestnut-brown and exhibits hints of faded mint color in the protected areas. Well struck and boasting a bold appearance, Hibernia's midsection is a bit poorly defined, but King George's locks on the opposing side are comparatively strong.
PCGS# 920937. NGC ID: F7J4.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier ex Tom Rinaldo, June 19, 1998; our (Stack's) sale of the Brian Danforth Collection, January 2009 Americana Sale, lot 7132.
