Undated (ca. 1652-1674) St. Patrick Farthing. Martin 1d.1-Ca.15, W-11500. Rarity-8. Copper. Nothing Below King. EF-40 (PCGS).
99.4 grains. Deep mahogany-brown with tan highpoints. An extremely sharp piece with very little actual wear, but lightly granular on both sides. Well struck, centers sharp, some facial detail visible on Saint Patrick, obverse aligned to 1 o'clock with full denticles and die edge visible at southwest, reverse aligned to 9 o'clock with complete denticles on right half of periphery. Some old diagonal pin scratches are present at lowest point of central obverse. Rim break at 3 o'clock on reverse stretches via thin crack to rightmost church steeple. This is the only example of this seemingly unique die pairing listed in the 2018 Martin reference.
PCGS# 915324. NGC ID: AUAR.
From the Sydney F. Martin Collection. Earlier from our sale of the Ted. L. Craige Collection, November 2012 Baltimore Auction, lot 6120, where it realized $9,987.50.
