CHILE. Bronze 10 Centavos Essai (Pattern), 1860. NGC MS-65 Brown.
Fonrobert-9946. An EXTREMELY RARE pattern for which little is known, this piece displays a central star that is familiar to Chilean coinage on the obverse, while the reverse has a '10' at center, which presumably could have been intended for Centavo or Decimo coinage. Very likely of French origin, 'ESSAI' appears at top on the reverse in between the surrounding laurel branches. Superbly preserved, this piece displays rich chocolate-brown coloration with surfaces that are virtually pristine. Only the second example we've encountered, with the famous pedigree certainly elevating its status for collectors who specialize in Chile's post-colonial period.
