CANADA. Upper Canada. Medal of the Loyal and Patriotic Society Silver Award Medal, ND (ca. 1817). PCGS SPECIMEN-64.
Leroux-866; Ford-411 (this example). By T. Wyon, Jr. Diameter: 51.2mm; Weight: 74.35 gms. Plain edge. Obverse: Depiction of the St. Lawrence River, with the Gulf of St. Lawrence at distance and Lake Ontario in the foreground; to left (northern side), British lion reclining right, warding off American eagle to right (southern side); nearer to left, Canadian beaver munching on wood; Reverse: FOR / MERIT in two lines within wreath. Most attractively toned, with intense cobalt and magenta hues on the obverse, and a sharp, well executed strike throughout, this RARE type offers great iconography pertaining to Great Britain, her colony Canada, and her former colony the United States. These were originally struck for the Loyal and Patriotic Society of Upper Canada and were intended to be presentation medals for gallant service during the War of 1812, but were never issued as such.
