COSTA RICA. Banco Internacional de Costa Rica. 100 Colones, 1918. P-Unlisted. PMG Very Fine 20.
This treasure is among the most special notes from Latin America we have offered. This is the first time this cataloguer has seen this note, or handled an issued example of this design with or without the overprint. While certified a VF20, the note faces up much nicer with excellent inks reminiscent of the popular Technicolor series from US paper money. Red dotted Banco Internacional de Costa Rica overprint on Costa Rica's 1897 100 Colones (of which only proofs exist) that only had a run of 10,000 issued notes for the serie E which is dated Dec. 15, 1918, S/N E 09939. The red overprint on the front translates to "Law No. 6 of October 5, 1918 provisional note of the International Bank of Costa Rica agreement No. 285 of December 14, 1918." The back shows arms at the center and an attractive guilloche design. The pinholes on the two top corners indicate this example was likely a presentation piece of some sort. Spectacular, and a top tier rarity.
