COSTA RICA. Republica de Costa Rica. 50 Colones, 1897. P-134. Serial Number 2. PMG Very Fine 20.
A note this cataloguer has never seen. A run of 13,000 notes were issued on Jan. 27, 1897, with this note being Serial Number 2. A notation on the reverse indicates it was to be incinerated on March 14th, 1901 but clearly this treasure was plucked from the pile and saved from such a fate. The front shows allegorical women at the center and a bust of Columbus on the left. The back has a guilloche design with arms at the center and a black stamp at the left. This is the only example graded by PMG and one of the most significant pieces being offered in this extensive Costa Rica section. PMG Comments "Perforation Cancelled, Rust Damage, Annotations."
