GREAT BRITAIN. Peace of Breda Silver Medal, 1667. NGC MS-64.
MI-528/176; Eimer-240; Pax in Nummis -257; van Loon-II, p. 555, 1. By C. Adolfszoon. Diameter: 71mm. Obverse: Armored female personification of War standing facing, holding spear with bundle of arrows and scepter surmounted by All-Seeing Eye, and with foot trampling upon nude female personification of Chaos; in background, lamb and lion reclining to left and right, respectively; at a distance in background, English ships burning upon the seas; Reverse: Draped female personification of Peace standing facing, holding sword with wreath, caduceus, and cornucopia, and with foot upon helmeted and sword; tranquil ships upon the seas in background; ornate floral wreath above held by descending manus Dei. Full of intense and well executed iconography, this Dutch-produced medal pertaining to the Peace of Breda presents a frosty nature to the devices and a somewhat deeper tone to accentuate them. Undoubtedly an exceptionally pleasing example, and one of the better of the type that one is likely to encounter.
