Description

Gorgeous Gem Fr. 272 $5 Silver Certificate

Fr. 272. 1899 $5 Silver Certificate. PMG Gem Uncirculated 65 EPQ.

A most pleasing example of one the most revered US paper money designs. The note features on its face the portrait of Running Antelope, a Sioux of the Oncpapa tribe, who is depicted in natural style. Gene Hessler in his Comprehensive Catalog of U.S. Paper Money observes that there is a mismatch: the headdress is a Pawnee war bonnet, not one of Sioux origin. This caused quite a bit of ill will among Native Americans who saw the bills and realized the error, faulting the Bureau of Engraving and Printing for creating an offensive depiction. This Indian Chief boasts beautiful margins, perfect color, and bold, original embossing easily seen through the holder.

Estimate: $8000.00- $12000.00
