Kirtland, Ohio. Kirtland Safety Society Bank. Haxby 245-G6. 1837 $3. Anti-Banking Note. PMG Fine 12.
Plate A. (Rust 14) Underwood, Bald, Spencer & Huffy. N. York & Philad. Center, Train. Identical ends, cameos with 3 dies in between. Issued to N. Parish. Signed by officers S(idney) Rigdon as Sec and J(oseph) Smith Jr. as Treas. but with black ink stamps obscuring the "CASHr" and PRESt" titles. Small stamped "ANTI" and "ING CO." flanking "BANK" in the title. These "Anti-Banking" issues were created after the organizers of the bank were unable to secure a state banking charter from the state of Ohio. This example displays even circulation and three frame lines, tight at left. The printed inks are dark and vividly detailed. First offering by us for this denomination since 2011. Scarce and desirable.
