Description

1936 Norfolk, Virginia Bicentennial. MS-68+ (PCGS). CAC.

This is a beautiful tab-toned specimen with iridescent shades of olive-green and deep brick-red at the obverse border. The reverse features a brilliant center with deep, multicolored peripheral shades. The strike is exceptional and the surfaces remain virtually perfect in every respect. It is among the finest known, with only 3 graded finer by PCGS at MS-69. It also sits at the top of the CAC Population Report, emphasizing the truly superior quality. Struck to commemorate the bicentennial of Norfolk, Virginia's transition from village to established borough in 1736. Just 16,936 pieces were struck for collectors in 1936, and survivors generally exhibit superior preservation compared to contemporary issues. Readily available through MS-67, the Norfolk half becomes scarce in MS-68 and incredibly rare any finer. This MS-68+ (PCGS) CAC example is among the most desirable survivors and is surely destined for a world-class cabinet or Registry Set.

PCGS# 9337. NGC ID: BYH5.

From the St. Paul Collection.
