Description

1872-S Liberty Head Eagle. AU-50 (NGC).

Only 17,300 eagles came off the dies at the San Francisco branch mint in 1872, and these went right into circulation out west where the currency of the realm was gold, not banknotes as out east. An 1872-S eagle in any grade is scarce, and rare above the AU range. Light wear is seen on both sides, the highpoints showing some friction. Some minor ticks and bag marks are scattered about, noted for accuracy, but the visual impact is limited. A nice piece overall.

PCGS# 8665. NGC ID: 2653.
