1788 New Jersey Copper. Maris 75-bb, W-5220. Rarity-4. Head Right, Running Fox Before Legend. VF-20 (PCGS).
148.12 grains. A well composed piece, predominantly golden-brown in appearance, yet with traces of faded mint-orange color engaging many of the design elements on both sides, right obverse with mottled steely-copper overtones. The strike is well centered with otherwise bold detail for the grade, upper left obverse and lower left reverse peripheries somewhat soft, although the all-important fox is discernible to the unaided eye. A few small carbon spots over and around the horse's head are noted, there are no mentionable marks. This is not the rarest Running Fox variety, but nice examples are difficult to come by. Die State 2. This lot includes PCGS insert #11735091, also with a grade of VF-20, and presumably from an earlier certification of this coin.
