1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 43-d, W-5225. Rarity-1. No Sprig Above Plow, Bulbous Nose, Outlined Shield. AU-55 BN (NGC).
A Condition census example from these otherwise readily obtainable dies, the typical survivor of which is well worn and/or impaired. Here we see smooth, hard copper toned in dominant medium brown. Blushes of olive are intermingled on the obverse, a swirl of crimson at the right reverse border is an ancient carbon spot. Ideally centered and crisply struck from a sharp early die state, this lovely coin would do equally well in a high grade type set or specialized New Jersey copper collection.
PCGS# 736659. NGC ID: AUL8.
