MEXICO. Guerrero. War of Independence. Real, ND (1816-21). PCGS Genuine--Holed, Poor/Fair Details; Countermark: Fine Details.
KM-277 (Unlisted host coin). Oval Mexican eagle countermark on a Mexico City 1766-Mo M Real of Charles III (KM-77). Holed, graffitied, and well-worn, this pillar-type host has been through a lot but now serves as an excellent canvas for a bold War of Independence counterstamp. Moderately toned throughout and quite eye-catching, this piece will please specialists in the series. According to the Standard Catalog as well as other major references on this subject, these particular countermarks are thought to have been issued by General Vicente Guerrero, leader of the insurgents of the south, 1816-1821. However, due to the lack of contemporary documentation this is speculative.
