MEXICO. VTIL - J.M.L./D.S. War of Independence. 8 Reales, ND (1812-13). Ferdinand VII. PCGS AG-3; Countermark: VF Details.
cf. KM-291 (different host coin). An insurgent J.M.L./D.S. countermark and a royalist VTIL countermark struck on an 1812 Zacatecas 8 Reales of Ferdinand VII. The combination of stamps suggests that this coin, initially struck as a royalist provisional issue, was then revalidated by insurgents led by Jose Maria Liceaga (J.M.L.), and then finally re-revalidated as "VTIL" (usable) by royalist forces. The coin evidently saw heavy circulation during and after that period, but it retains pleasing clarity of detail on both countermarks. The host coin's surfaces are mostly worn smooth but remain identifiable and exhibit a uniform mauve-gray tone. Highly intriguing and worthy of strong bids from specialist collectors of Mexican War of Independence issues.
