MEXICO. Cob 2 Reales, ND (1542-55)-Mo O. Mexico City Mint. Carlos & Johanna. PCGS AU-53.
KM-12; Cal-103; Nesmith-109A. Weight: 6.84 gms. Late Series. A handsome and highly individual example of the type. While its rather hasty strike yields some areas of peripheral flatness and minor die shift on the pillars side, the coin evidently spent very little time in circulation. The details are remarkably crisp and complemented by a rich charcoal tone with a multitude of iridescent highlights that glisten in the lustrous protected areas. Free from any of the cleaning, scratches, or saltwater damage so often seen on the type, this coin is a delightful survivor.
