FRANCE. 5 Francs, 1851-A. Paris Mint. Napoleon III. NGC MS-62.
KM-761.1; Gad-719. Rich gunmetal gray cabinet patina is original and appealing when flicked under a bright source. Otherwise the smooth surfaces demonstrate exceptional technical quality for the grade with almost none of the usual bagmarks or minor abrasions. Struck in the last year from the short-lived Second Republic, Napoleon III came to power in December of 1851 following a coup. Designed by E.A. Oudine, many consider this 5 Francs to be one of the most beautiful crown designs struck anywhere during the entire 19th century.
