FRANCE. Louis d'Or, 1723-D. Lyon Mint. Louis XV. NGC Unc Details--Salt Water Damage.
Fr-459; KM-468.5; Gad-338. Gold is a metal that largely remains untouched even after centuries spent submerged upon the ocean's floor, and the present coin is no exception. A bright and extremely attractive shipwreck piece with some reddish and charcoal coloration really the only evidence of a prolonged period at sea. Le Chameau ("Camel") sank in August 1725 after a storm blew her onto some rocks several miles east of her destination of Louisburg, Nova Scotia. She was sailing from France to Canada with money to pay for raw goods and equip French troops when she was lost with all hands, estimates ranging as high as 316 dead. Her cargo of gold and silver pieces was largely recovered in 1965.
