During the siege of the French fortress of Tournai by the Grand Alliance, both sides suffered significant losses in what was to be one of the bloodiest battles of the War of the Spanish Succession, with a total of nearly 10,000 casualties. The attack commenced on the night of 27 June, and would continue for an impressive 69 days of resistance before the French finally surrendered.
