URUGUAY. General Maximo Santos Silver Medal, 1884. PCGS SPECIMEN-50.
Diameter: 38mm. Obverse: Portrait left over laurel sprays, legend around; Reverse: 5 line inscription with dual legends around. An intriguing unsigned medal with warm dove gray cabinet patina and charcoal clinging to the recesses. Well struck up with a reasonable mint shine left in the fields and light handling across the high points that does little to distract from design detail. Born in 1847, General Maximo Benito Santos Barbosa rose to power in 1882 and remained at the epicenter of Uruguayan politics until his death in 1889.
From the David Sterling Collection.
