Description

GUATEMALA. San Andres Osuna. Herrera and Chacon. Plantation 6 Reales Token, ND (ca. Late 19th Century). PCGS EF-40.
FS-013.08. 8-sided edge. Obverse: HERRERA & Ca around bee; Reverse SAN ANDRES OSUNA, denomination in center. Some moderate wear and antique brass patina provide a wholly original appearance of a lightly to moderately circulated token. Quite a difficult offering that is sure to satisfy Guatemalan specialists who appreciate numismatics, exonumia, and economic history. The Herreras were one of the wealthiest families in Guatemala, their wealth originating from a close connection to dictator Justo Rufino Barrios (in power 1873-85). When Barrios privatized Catholic Church lands, the Herreras established an agricultural empire. The bee that appears on this token was adopted by Don Manuel Herrera as the family symbol, representing industriousness.
From the David Sterling Collection.

Estimate: $25.00- $50.00
