DIOCLETIAN & GALERIUS. Duo of Gold-Plated AE Denarii (2 Pieces) (3.74 gms), ca. A.D. 300. EXTREMELY FINE.
cf. RIC V-114 & RIC VI-60B. A fascinating pair of AE fractions from the Tetrarchy period. Plated in gold, likely to make them resemble AV Quinarii. The pieces were fused together environmentally with much of their copper cores exposed. The piece of Diocletian was broken, now repaired. A highly interesting example of ancient forgery that uses genuine coins as a base rather than being struck from counterfeit dies. An eccentric offering that is certain to appeal to specialist collectors.
