SYRIA. Phoenicia. Tyre. AR Shekel (13.94 gms), Lifetime of Christ issue, dated CY 144 (A.D. 18/9). NGC Ch VF, Strike: 4/5 Surface: 3/5.
HGC-10, 357; RPC-1, 4657; Prieur-1417. Obverse: Laureate head of Melkart right, lion skin around neck; Reverse: Eagle standing left on prow; palm frond in background; to left, ΡΜΔ (date) above club; to right, KP above monogram. A charming example of this biblical type, crucially struck during the lifetime of Christ. Quite well-produced for the period, it displays a strong portrait of the Phoenician deity along with a clear date on the reverse. The flan, of high metal quality and with just a light tone, suffers no unsightly damage or corrosion. A fully satisfying representative of the ever-popular Shekels of Tyre.
