The V Corps was formed within the Army of the Potomac on May 18, 1862, as V Corps Provisional, and was engaged in the Peninsula Campaign to seize Richmond. The V Corps saw extensive action throughout the war, and was under the command of such well-known generals as Joseph Hooker, George G. Meade, George Sykes, and Gouverneur K. Warren. The corps fought at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Spotsylvania Court House, Cold Harbor, and the Siege of Petersburg. Few Union Army corps saw greater involvement in major battles than the V.
