70 mm, total length. 35.4 grams. Brooch-backed hanger reading KILLED IN BATTLE with intertwined WV below, linked to circular drop 36.5 mm in diameter. The obverse depicts a charging officer on horseback with infantry behind, with the dates 1861 - 1865 flanking the State Seal of West Virginia below. The reverse contains the inscription PRESENTED / BY THE / STATE / OF / WEST VIRGINIA enclosed in a large wreath. A red, white and blue ribbon 75 mm in length is mounted behind. Washington M. Garvin was born in 1837 to David and Barbara Garvin of Bath County, Virginia and enlisted on March 1, 1862 at Wheeling, West Virginia. He was mustered into B Company of the West Virginia 10th Infantry as a private. He married Samantha Smith in Lewis, West Virginia in 1864, but was evidently killed prior to December 5, 1864, when Samantha Garvin filed for his pension as a widow. The 10th Infantry first saw auction in July 1863, and fought extensively in July 1864 around Winchester, Virginia, in October 1864 at Cedar Creek, Virginia and ended its service in April 1865 at Petersburg, Virginia.
