1864 Cathedral of St. Peter and St. Paul, Philadelphia Medal. By Anthony C. Paquet. Silvered White Metal. CONSECRATED JUNE 30 - 1890 in Obverse Field. MS-62 (NGC).
80 mm. Obv: Exterior cathedral with inscriptions CATHEDRAL OF ST. PETER AND ST. PAUL, PHILADELPHIA. above, BEGUN 1846, / COMPLETED 1864. The upper obverse field is engraved CONSECRATED JUNE 30 - 1890. Rev: Detailed interior cathedral view with peripheral inscriptions TE ES PETRUS ET SUPER HANC PETRAM AEDIFICABO ECCLESIAM MEAM above, VAS ELECTIONIS EST MIHI ISTE UT PORTET NOMEN MEUM CORAM GENTIBUS. The surfaces are rich pewter-gray overall with no troublesome marks or other blemishes, just a bit of muting to the finish that explains the lower Mint State grade from NGC. An especially handsome example of the only American architectural medal to rival those of Jacques Weiner in depth and complexity of design. The examples in this sale with the extra engraving in the upper obverse field are the first of this type that we can recall handling in recent memory.
