Undated (1853-1854) Octagonal $1. BG-501. Rarity-5-. Liberty Head, "Humbert" Eagle Reverse. AU-58 (PCGS).
Flashy semi-prooflike quality for this popular and eagerly sought design type in the California small denomination gold series. Wisps of pale rose iridescence enhance otherwise golden-honey surfaces, both sides with plenty of bold to sharp striking detail. The modest rarity rating should not fool one into thinking that BG-501 is an easy variety to locate. The issue is extremely popular with collectors due to the fact that the "Humbert" eagle reverse is similar in style to that of the contemporary Humbert $50 "slugs" that circulated in California during the Gold Rush era. Scarce from a market availability standpoint and of particular significance given the rarity of Mint State survivors, this Choice AU example is sure to see spirited bidding among astute specialists in this series.
