1827 Capped Bust Half Dollar. O-143. Rarity-4. Square Base 2. MS-63 (PCGS).
An exciting coin insofar as it was cataloged as a Proof in all of its auction appearances prior to this one. While PCGS has since determined that it is a circulation strike, the fields are noticeably reflective when the coin is viewed with the aid of direct lighting, which feature certainly contributed to its Proof attribution in historic sales. We also note a well centered, generally sharply executed strike, although the stars are drawn to the edge on the obverse due to die fatigue. As well, the fields are not universally polished, which is most clearly seen around the eagle and between the olive leaves on the reverse. Fully Choice in quality and wonderfully original in preservation, both sides are richly toned with iridescent cobalt blue and mauve undertones to warm olive-gray patina. A thoroughly PQ coin for the assigned grade, and sure to excite advanced collectors of Capped Bust coinage. Although this coin was cataloged as a Proof in earlier auction appearances, Stack's Bowers Galleries is offering it in this sale as an MS-63, as currently certified by PCGS .
