1846 Braided Hair Cent. N-1. Rarity-1. Small Date. MS-65 RB (PCGS). CAC.
This is a lustrous and frosty Gem with plenty of mint red color to both sides. Mottled steel-brown and olive patina is most pronounced in the centers. Sharply struck with few marks of consequence, faint speckles of carbon are the primary impediments to an even higher Mint State grade. One of the carbon spots, that over the letter T in CENT, serves as a useful identifier. Grellman Die State a, "rare," and struck from an uncracked obverse. In his cataloging of this coin in the 2009 Naftzger Collection sale Bob Grellman noted that it was ranked CC#1 in the Noyes census with an EAC grade of MS66, and "MS-65+, very close to MS66, and tied for CC#1 in the Grellman census."
