1856 Braided Hair Half Cent. B-1. Rarity-7. Proof-63 BN (PCGS).
This is an aesthetically appealing Proof 1856 half cent. Both sides exhibit dominant golden-brown color with antique gold and, on the reverse only, powder blue undertones. The strike is full and semi-reflectivity is evident under a light. The penultimate date in the Proof half cent series, the 1856 is scarce with an estimated population of 200 to 250 coins extant in all grades. Most survivors are of the B-3 variety, identifiable by doubling to the letter T in CENT. This rare piece is one of the few from the B-1 die pairing that we have handled in recent years.
